The standard box is a 722.6 5 speed box,a very good one at that, yes the comfort is the same as the S-W switch, mainly that comfort is a second gear start

I have a CLK 230K Sport (when she returns from the body shop) I use W most of the time The exceptions being when the engines cold and pulling out at junctions. Thats carrying just the driver and no luggage of course....pulls like atrain and since I've changed the sump breather the engine rev's beautifully. I was doing a ton down the M4 with out realising it on my way to
Weybridge three weeks back, till they shut it!!!

I was under the impression that it altered the change up/ change down points in the gearbox.
In "S" standard mode the gearbox changed up/down at slightly higher speeds than when "C" comfort is selected.
Therefore S gives a slightly increased level of performance, but with a small penalty on economy.
I always use "C". :p

Hi Dave, you are also correct, it does that, in fact on the older cars with the 722.4-5 that is the only thing it does

2005 C270CDi Avantgarde Estate. Bought 2005, sold 2022.
I always use S - I'm a pretty gently driver but find my C270CDi is slow enough to pick up its skirts from rest without have the penalty of being in 2nd gear.

Also, if you do 'boot it', perhaps trying to get on to a fast moving roundabout, then it will still shift down to 1st, but with an un-Mercedes like jolt.

That as I recall it was a good feature on my 300TE, kicking down it was like a rocket, I enjoyed doing that

Yes - Always in 'S' with CLK 270 CDI, for exactly same reason as Rory. It performs better. Consumption is marvellous in 'S' so it would be miraculous in 'Comfort' then!

on mine, the C also causes the torque converter to slip far more so the revs pick up noticably before the speed. I figured that this would result in a drop in mpg though not by much I'd imagine, but it does give a disconcetingly disconnected feel as the car catches up with the engine, so I tend to stay in S.

I'm usually in S mode say about 85% of the time then just for a change I'll go into M mode and use the paddle switches:D it's unbelievable - fuel economy goes out the window but who cares - what fun.;)

Mine is S & W on my W202 C250TD.
I drive in S with W pulling away in 2nd gear. W = Winter. The change up also happens at lower revs.
I personally prefer S

Having read this thread I now drive in S mode and I much prefer it. However, the switch is really on the wrong side for a RHD vehicle. You would have thought for a prestige marque they would have moved it :-?

Had my C200K for about 6 weeks now and most of that time its been in C mode.
After reading this thread yesterday, I switched to S mode last night to see if there was any discernable difference.
Yes. There was. It was much sharper and acceleration away from the lights was noticably swifter. Hardly sports car fast but certainly pickup was improved.
However..............I think I actually prefer the C setting...........
