First of all i am new to the forum and would appreciate any help and advice with this problem.

Over the last 12 months on occasions when i go to start the car, there is nothing there. All the ignition lights come on but there is no contact. If i keep turning the ignition on and off it will eventually make contact and start. I have changed the starter motor, this seemed to cure the problem but it has now returned. As with any intermittent problem it is difficult to pinpoint.

Barry.

Hi Barry and welcome.

The ignition switch can do this, you could unplug the switch part and give it a good squirt of switch cleaner, the non drying type.

It went on my 1999 SL and quite a few on here as well had the same fault.

It only applies to the later cars where the N10 multi function relay was re designed.

There is one more thing that is known to do this, that is the K38 starter lockout relay.

This sits behind the radio/heater control and the spades on this relay make a very poor contact,, on a 1997 car I would start there, it is all wired from the alarm box
