Heres a rough quote for work on an ML270, running with an intemittent loss of power.

New exhaust from the cat back; £450 plus £87 for nuts bolts and clamps!!! PLUS £ 170 to fit it.

Brake switch; £7 ish and another 57 to fit it.

Speed sensor at another ridiculous price to fit.

Serpentine belt needs changing so theres another £100 quid or more.

This was one of those jeeps than couldn't get above 40 mph on a bad day, be interesting to see if its ok now.
The MAF was mentioned as a possible cause before it went in but never showed up on the computer.

Prices may not be spot on but the 4 jobs are the total quote for work required was £1300. i nearly choked on the price they charging for nuts and bolts.
I'm sure somebody else out there has had the same shock prices before.

Moan over,, and its not even my motor............

Last week I was quoted £270 +parts+vat to fit the 2 bottom ball joints on the Sprinter.

Today while doing the above job myself I found one of the front shockers was little better than useless. Merc have quoted £115+vat each(ouch). apparantly the shockers for my heavy duty front axle are dearer than standard ones. Being a perfectionist means I will have to fit a pair so it could be pricey.

Whats wrong with the exhaust, rotted? I would source one else where and fit my self, same with the serpentine belt.

Were these items identified on the diagnosis computer?

I may of been tempted to try a MAf first.

I am interested in the above as I am trying to build up as much info as possible for when things with my ML270 start going wrong, at the moment I am loving it.

I would have done the work myself, but as i said, not my car. Belongs to sister in law and in her best wisdom told dealer to complete the job when she handed over the keys.

It went in for fault finding on an intermittent problem so the computer threw up the options. The brake switch thing only happened on the way in.

Apparently the CAT was collapsing and Blah Blah Blah needs replaced.

Anyway, now she sees the wisdom of not agreeing to work before she knows whats involved.

If the speed sensor thing works then i'll post it up as it seems theres been a few folk with similar problems.

............

When you do a diagnostic check and the brake lamp switch comes up, it will include the speed sensor as when the switch goes faulty it kills the CAN speed signal, Its the same with the MAF, you do need common sense and at least know how these things work otherwise it gets very expensive for the poor customer.

Will things ever get better.

Is it just me or does this all smell a bit like MAF ? £45 for one from EBay.. i just bought one and my car is transformed.

A week before i had put a new 100 amp battery in for £72, Stealer was quoting well over £200 to supply and fit it.

That's why I use an indie.
I hope I made it clear in my last post that the chances are, that once the brake switch is replaced you should not need the speed sensor.
