are any precautions necessary before doing it??/eg distributor cap,leads,---are there any sensitive components in the engine and bay which should be avoided or covered during the steam cleaning process?

steam cleaning

Don't do it!
The water will get into all the electical connections and cause problems over time.  If you want to remove oil and grime use a degreaser sprayed on with a hand sprayer and then wash clean with water from a garden sprayer.

steam cleaning

Sunil.

Ive always steam cleaned my engines, and never had any problems to be honest. Just avoid plugs and distributor, other wise you will have a rather embarassing cranking session in your local clean park!

ps, take a can of WD40 with you,......never fails!
