Hi my steering is a little stiff and does not self centre on its own needs a little help, and there is a little play when moving steering wheel left to right-Today i have had the wishbone bushes and ball joints changed (THEY WERE WORN ANYWAY. Mechanic said it might be the steering column or steering might need adjustment to take up play is this possible on a 1995 C180.

Any ideas anyone???

Thanks.

I think there is an adjustment on the steering box. It should be under the heatshield. If this adjusted badly then you would get this problem though I fail to understand why this could have happened.

It may be that somewhere in the cars history somebody felt that there was too much play in the steering and adjusted this.

The obvious thing would be the lower ball joints, but you have had them changed.

My favorite is to disconnect the track rod ends to narrow down where the problem lies.

I to feel the same as Turnipsock, in that someone has over tightened the steering box. there should be play on either lock, and you have a compensator for the straight ahead position.

I thought that it had always been like it, this is different, You cant really have play, and the same time stiff or heavy steering. the steering boxes are very straight forward to adjust. You can do as Turnipsock says, undo the ball joints , you can then track it down.
