Can anyone tell me how to find out the part number for my W210 steering rack. I'd rather avoid the dealer route and I'm trying to get a price on a reconditioned unit - chasis number WDB2100482B276311.
I'm still trying to sort out the sqeak from my steering which has now been confirmed as the steering rack head (whatever that is). I spoke to a specialist ex mercedes mechanic who can recall a mod that came out whereby the head to be replaced/overhauled without changing the whole rack and this was carried out under warraty for earlier cars. However I've phoned loads of dealers and MBUK most of whom know of the mod but can't/won't supply a part number as it isn't on their computer but was sent out as a memo. I would have thought the part number would be readily available even if it meant checking previous warranty jobs for it.
Anyway it looks like I'm onto a loser so a whole reconditioned rack might be the way to go

Thanks for the input folks you've no idea how helpful this is.

Malcolm, I'm an ignorant arse so I'm not sure if this is the repair kit or not but I'll try and get across what I've been told.
The repair kit came about due to warranty claims on a sqeaky noise from the steering rack. They used to replace the whole rack but obviously they was costly hence the repair kit for the steering rack head. The specialist seemed very knowledgable on the subject and contacted MB Sunderland regarding the kit but to avail. They all seem to know about it but because it isn't on their parts computer no one will put in the time to find it (understandable really). The specialist also referred to it as a boss and said although annoying it wasn't dangerous - more of a tolerance issue within the head ???
Hopefully I can now go back to MB with this number and they can tell me if it is the right component.
Thanks for puting in the time to get that part number for me it's much appreciated and hopefully will resolve the issue for me

Malcolm, I've spoken to the specialist guy and he reckons that will be the correct repair kit as the mod describes it accurately. It would appear you've came up with the goods again
A cyber pint on it's way to you sir
