Steering & Vibrations CLK230 (2000)

Hey chaps,

when I turn my steering wheel to the right there is a bit of a noise, sounds like a rubbing noise. At the same time, if I have pretty much full right lock on and hold the position and drive, the same noise presents itself. Possibly a squeaky bush?

Also, when I drive from about 75+ some vibration from the front end becomes noticable. Can't drive through it and the car feels a little unsafe! Any ideas?

The merc doesn't like corners as much as my old M-Sport BMW 5 series! The merc is a big softie by comparison!!! Nice and chilled though!!

Cheers,

TG

Is the serpentine belt loose or glazed making the noise on full lock.

You must have the front wheels balanced to cure the vibration if you can feel it through the steering,,if you feel it through the seat, then rear wheels or propshaft center bearing

Hi again TV,

you're becoming my MB guru!!!! serpentine belt - don't have a clue what that is, but I will attempt to look it up. It doesn't only make the noise on full right lock, it starts about a half turn before full lock and progressively gets worse.

As for the vibrations, I feel them through the steering & the seat. The rear drivers side tyre has a bulge and the front drivers side alloy has a bit of a knock around the rim like it's mounted a kerb at speed.

Cheers for all your help with my car so far, you've been a wealth of information!

Tony

serpentine belt - ok, gotcha! A fancy fan belt!!!

It's certainly worth a check, but wouldn't the steering do that when turning both left and right in that case? My car is doing it in one direction only. It will be checked before work tomorrow!!!

A bottom swivel could have become tight in one direction only,,thats easy to check

Are we still talking about the serpentine belt?

Please pardon my ignorance! I tinker only with motorbikes and aeroplanes!!!!

Oh, should have mentioned. The steering does make a racket when being turned, however, when in full right lock or thereabouts, I can hold the steering wheel in position, drive forward a little and still get the noise.

Also can get a noise when stationary by simply turning the wheel.

Don't know if that changes things?

You could open the bonnet and listen while someone holds the wheel on full lock. Ignore the swivels if it does it when the car is not moving.

I dont know much, and i may be very wrong, but my mates had bad noises on full lock and vibrations.

turned out he had alloys that was not suited to the car, too large... changed it to car's original spec and sorted.

Cheers for that guys,

there are a few niggly things wrong with the car and i've got a months warranty with the garage I bought the car from (second hand car dealer)

So with that in mind, the car is going into Mercedes tomorrow morning for a health check. Spoke to them today and expressed my concerns about the car and they've assured me that they will check the car from back to front and detail exactly what needs fixing for the car. £35 for a standard health check and £80 for a full check of the car.

I wonder how the garage will react when I give them a list from MB!!!!!

I'll let you all know what MB find, hopefully it will help others in the future.

A Tyre BULGE!!!!! Tony please get that straight off the car.
Otherwise.........!?!??
Sounds like you need a thorough front suspension check if it's really been kerbed hard. You're doing the right thing by the sound of it.

Just to update,

the problem from the steering is the NSF U/tray catching the wheel

The vibration is the track rod end being siezed & front ball joints.

The 'clunk' from the rear is the exhaust brackets & heat shield

The BAS warning light is a faulty brake light switch.

Not happy! Please see my theady - Bought A Lemon? CLK230 for the full MB report on the car!!!! Advice appreciated!
