steering wheel noise

Whenever I turn the steering wheel hard, like going around a roundabout I hear what sounds like a pump or motor noise coming in. It is probably coming from the power steering. Does this mean that there is a problem on the PS or is this normal. My car is a E300 TD W210 '97. It is quite loud and goes immediatel the wheel is straightened up
