You need a 2" long 28 torx bit to remove the air bag, do not turn on ignition without it plugged in. the wheel is held on with a 10mm hex key, and this will be tight at 90Nm

hi

its a Torx (T30) driver you need to remove the airbag. Try to get one that is a full screwdriver otherwise the bit gets stuck in the holes.

the large allan key you need can be helped with the use of a bar of some kind attached to it (i used a trolly jack handle).

make sure you (or an assistant) holds the steering wheel in place when you undo/tighten the main bolt - dont rely on the steering column lock.

disconnect the battery to be on the safe side. make sure you dont touch the ignition with the 'bag removed.

apply some thead-lock to the main bolt upon refit.

The only way that I could get mine off was with the garage airline wheel driver and a 10mm socket

I've removed quite a few W124 ones and also my R107 SL. These all came off relatively easily.

The CLK one i removed (W208) was a nightmare to remove and I almost gave up

Having looked at the wheel itself there is 4 screws at the back of the wheel itself which looks like it holds the rim in place ..do I have to remove the wheel completely ,or can the rim be removed ?.The covering on the rim has split and worn with age

This is not an easy job as 2 way stretch vinyl is not sold, and only used in industry, one way stretch is too thick, you could re colour what you have

it has crumbled in a couple of places and split revealing the base ,I have put some black insulation tape around the top of the wheel as a temporary measure

has it got an airbag? sounds like you may have an aftermarket wheel fitted.

this is what you should have as standard (just leather/plastic - not wood)

yes it does have an airbag...but one thing I recall is when I had a new back box fitted some years back was that the car was listed as built for Hongkong market, and aquiring the box took some days
