The volume control rocker switches on my steering wheel are a tad worn, is is possible to replace them to bring them back to looking new ?

They look like the lacker has come off, so thats not really an option.

But thanks for the shot.

So does the MB badge pop out to reveal a nut, that I undo, and then the air bag / rocker switches can be accessed to replace the switches ?

JONRW I was planning to do exactly the same thing as the finish on my buttons seemed a little tacky (like a coating of gluey substance which I assume is the protective coating). I have used my fingernails to scratch off the coating without damaging the plastic on the buttons and gradually the coating has come away leaving 4 super smooth plastic buttons. Worth a go and you've got nothing to lose really seeing as you were planning to replace them anyway ;)

The airbag on most is released by two Torx bolts from the rear but great care must be taken to isolate the airbag circuit before you touch anything. On a 124 this involves lifting all the carpets and panels in the N/S footwell and pulling the RED plug. You should check for your model.
Not unless you want to fit a new airbag of course:-(

RESOLVED - took High-Lo's advice and whilst the wife was shopping in Sainsbury's I sat and scratched the remaining lacker off the volume control rocker switch, it looks like new(ish) and the wife was pleasantly surprised that I didn't moan for the time she took.

Jon, the lacquer is put there to stop the lettering coming off, you should really mask up and apply a couple of coats of clear lacquer.

Would the lettering come off? I thought it was clear to let the illumination through at night which is why I haven't worried too much about it.

If Malcolm is correct (like he always is) then I guess that you should follow Malcolm's advice Jon as I had nothing to lose when I did mine as all the gunk was coming off the buttons anyway.

Cheers,
Steve

I just checked my buttons again while the car was in the garage and the buttons are definitely illuminated so do you think that the symbols on the buttons will rub off or is it just opaque plastic?

Thank you for bringing this up, I think that the buttons are made in a white/clear plastic and the black is added for the lettering.

I remember looking at a sparsely specked SL with only one button in use out of the 6 possible, this button was more white than black where the clear and the black had worn off as it was the only button he had. (no comments from Blobcat please)
So I think that I would still spray them with an aerosol of clear lacquer, problem is that you cant get a matt clear.

Thanks again High Lo
