The “chrome” (tin foil) on the steering wheel shroud delaminating is a known problem but Merc dont sell just the shroud and want £1200+ for a complete wheel . I have looked on EBay for a replacement but can’t find one . Has anyone repaired their shroud or have a suggestion about replacements?

vehicle upholstery place might suggest a decent repair.

You don't say which wheel you've got - I think there are 3 for your car - 4-spoke, 3 spoke AMG line (flat bottom), and proper AMG (flat top and bottom).

You can get new chrome trims off eBay - they seem to range from £30 to £200. Some are 'Genuine' some are from China. There are some Merc part numbers in some of the ads, in which case it ought to be possible to order them from Merc I'd have thought.

You need to pop the Airbag out (loads of Youtube videos) and then it's just 4 screws to undo and you can remove the chrome bezel. The steering wheel switches are screwed into the bezel, so there are a few more screws to undo after that, but it's not rocket surgery. You don't have to remove the steering wheel from the car - although that is just one (very tight) M10 allen key.

Beware of buying a new steering wheel. If you do that you'll need to swap over the electronic unit hiding behind the internal metal horn plate. Also the airbags are different between the 4 spoke and 3 spoke wheels, so to re-use your existing airbag you'll probably need to stick with the same style of wheel as you currently have. 4 spoke airbags fit the 3 spoke wheel, but there is a large gap underneath the bottom edge. I doubt a 3 spoke bag will fit a 4 spoke wheel.

I think you would get a better finish taking it off and re spraying it then a coating.

Much cheaper too.
