Steering Whine on 2001 ML430

Can anyone help with this, I have developed a whine on the power steering when the car is cold, it get noisier when you turn the wheel. Once the car has warmed up generally after about a few miles the noise goes. Any idea's of what this might be also where is the power steering fluid tank as nothing is mentioned in the handbook.

HI!

I have exactly same symptoms in my SL129. During next service I am planning to change fluids to power steering (They might be original ones from -92). It never whines when warmed up. I found this whining when temperature was below zero celsius. Any other Idea than replacing fluids? It is not the belt.

did you gentlemen ever resolve this problem?
my ml430's pas has just started whining when cold, and i was wondering what solutions worked for you two.

any help would be appreciated.

There are known occasions where the '0' ring/gasket under the fluid reservoir can allow air ingress and cause a whine...........very easy to change the 0 ring....just a single central bolt inside the reservoir to remove.
