Hi all

I have just bought a 1984 230E :)D:D:D). BUT trying to start it is becoming an 'issue' so would appreciate any advice please

The key goes in the ignition barrel fine - no problem
Then it takes a little 'wiggling' about (4-5 times) before it will turn to the 'on' postion and start the car.

I heard a horror story (from a local mechanic) of ignition barrels in these old cars sticking in the 'locked' position and the whole thing having to be ground off!! - time consuming AND expensive...

Should I worry......

Any suggestions.... do I keep using the car..... or...

Any advice greatfully recieved

Hello and welcome,, the barrel must be changed as soon as possible or it will fail.

This can only be done with the key turned to 1, or the steering lock will engaged, never to come out again

The barrels cost about £50 and are ordered for you car, I can sen you the fitting details.

Nice cars the 123 :D

I'm sure there not malc, with the 123 and early 126 there is a single pin that should be inserted when the key is in position 1 and then the black cover unscrews. its quite diff to get the pin in the correctly and the cover is diff to grip.

Thank you,,I had to think hard when I posted, perhaps it was the other way around. I have nothing on the 123, but I do have info on the 126, so I will take a look.

Thanks for pointing this out
