Hi , I've just bought my first merc...an old 2004 C220 2.2 diesel and it's got a weird vibration sometimes when accelerating hard. I read the service history, and no mention of transmission fluid ever being changed, so I've ordered the bits to do that, just wondered if anyone had experienced similar. It's not a single bang....it's a repetitive d-d-d-d-d-d-d-d sort of thing ?

I was fearing that ... do you think fresh fluid might sort it ? If not, is there a guide anywhere to replacing the torque converter ? I presume it's just disconnect the prop, gearbox off, switch TC, back together, lovely jubbly :D

a fluid and filter change can work wonders often so its worth the gamble.
my 722.6 gbox was on its last legs after no oil change for over 100k miles but i changed all the oil in box and tc and after a week or two of hit and misss gearchanges its settled down to a silent box with smooth changes

Could it be a bad case of a glycol leak, the 646 was on the list.

Is there an easy way to test if the coolant is getting into the trans? Where does it get in ?
Another fault discovered today... handbrake is not working at all. I presume it should engage when you kill the engine / remove the key ?

I've got all the bits to do the fluid change, except the copper washer for the drain plug & the replacement cap for the filler tube. Can't find them on ebay, can anyone recommend a spares shop I can get them from, really want to crack on with it next weekend.

OK ... found the caps, just need the washer. Is it just a standard copper washer or some "special" mercedes thing ? Anyone know what size it is ?

Standard washer sold in most car shops, if you have got a leaking rad/cooler changing the fluid should make it a lot better, but if it is leaking this raises the surface of the converter clutch plates, they can be re adapted or a exchange converter about £200

Did you do the "transmission reset procedure" after changing the fluid ? I saw a vid on youtube describing how to reset the transmission so it re-learns . Some comments said it made a vast improvement, others said they could no longer get above 2nd so I'm a bit wary.

scuppered

Just tried to change the ATF ... the drain bolt is rounded. I presume If I bought a vacuum pump I could pump the fluid out through the dipstick tube, then remove the sump leaving the drain bolt in ?

drop one side of the gbox oil pan more than the other side and let it leak out that way. then remove pan to change filter and clean out pan.

I've given up now for this weekend Nyx, ordered a cheap little oil pump, don't want to lose any oil as I want to put the exact same amount in as I take out.(read that these boxes can be quite sensitive to oil level). There was some oil on the surface of the box sump, some guy said that the wiring connector to the box is a common leak point, so I ordered one of them too. Hopefully this time next week it'll all be sorted.

yes the pilot bush goes on these gearboxes and leak atf all over the gearbox wiring. vids on you tube and only a ten minute job but don't over tighten the central nut on the connector as they snap off easily. also the pan bolts only want tightening to about 7lbs/ft i think. more knowledgeable on here than i.

Changing TC

Right, I changed the trans oil / filter etc, ran it for a couple of weeks, and it still does it. It's fine when cold.....but once it's warmed up , going uphill, give it a bit of throttle and it judders. I tell you what it feels like, you know when you get wheelspin in a front wheel drive car and the wheel starts bouncing.... it's like that.....d.d.d.d.d.d.d.d..dddddddddddddd

So I've just got a used Torque Converter off ebay, and gonna have a crack at DIY-ing it. Now, I can't find any guides on removing the 722.699 box ....anyone know of one ? If not, can anyone give me any advice on consumables required.... will I need any gaskets / washers / rubbers ???? I was thinking of taking the valve body out whilst it's out, and giving that a service. what do I need ?

Are you certain that this judder is gearbox related?
How did you arrive at this conclusion?

Umble.

Someone earlier in this thread reckoned torque converter , went and read a bit, seemed to make sense. Open to alternative suggestions though, if there's anything easier to check before I'm under the car with a gearbox on my head then I'll gladly do it. The judder only happens at max torque...i.e. coming uphill at mid revs... so TC makes sense to me. If it was worn prop bushes / bearings it'd surely be worse with increased speed....increased centrifugal force, but I can tootle down the M65 at a tonne with no judder at all. Coming up our hill in 2nd though = big judder.
