Strange knocking from CLK ashtray (W209)

I have a 2005 CLK convertible (Automatic) which has a strange rhythmic knocking sound coming from the ashtray area when you start the engine, not too dissimilar to the sound that the wheel lock adapter makes when it rolls around in the ashtray, and no, it's not the wheel lock adapter rolling around in the ashtray, because it makes the noise even when I have removed the adapter and the car is not moving. It stops after about 30 seconds and doesn't seem to affect the running of the vehicle. (It's not the CD player either.) Has anybody experienced this or can come up with a suggestion as to what it may be?

Stepper motor issue???

Old Triumphs do this for 30 seconds, normal for worn bearings........sorry that doesn't help

Sounds exactly like the stepper motors going round and round when the gears are broken in the dash, as above
