Guys,

Hope you are all ok.

After some advice. My sister car makes a strange kocking sound when driving. If you drive the car in a straight line its there, and the faster you go the faster the knock gets. If you drive and turn the wheel to the left the knocking goes. Turn to the right and the knocking noise is there? Any ideas please?

Hello and welcome,,could this be more a ticking sound,,it so it will be a broken clip on the parking brake cable that lets the cable hit the prop shaft and a very common fault

to add to my compatriots useful and informed post, one other possible cause could be worn antiroll bar links and/or bushes, worn suspension joints or broken springs. so roheel, where does it seem the sound is coming from? and is it possibly worse over bumpy roads and almost goes away over very smooth roads?

You will have to go under the car and just re clip or fix the cable back up. easier on a ramp as hard to see up there when laying on the ground

Alexander, its constant no matter what surface. Sometimes when your driving you dont hear anything, then all of a sudden it returns.... As its ok when i turn the wheel slightly and when car wheels are central makes me thing it could be the clip Malcolm mentioned. I hope it is!!! Malcolm, where abouts is the cable located?

No it will not and many do not find it the first time,, but the do when we insist that this is the fault,, gust work back from the parking brake cable and you will see it

i know what you mean. I took it to a mechanic and he told me its the gearbox and the whole thing will be replaced. He didnt even drive the car! Main question....if left, is it dangerous? Also which clip is it in the diagram so i can order it if broken?

I know, i was shocked when he said that.... I was like but what makes you say that? His words were 'cos it makes the noise in all forward gears, and not reverse!' HUH?

Nope but in the long run it could damage the parking brake outer sheath

footbrake cable clip

Just read about your problem and if as Malcolm says, it's the footbrake cable clip thats broken, forget about trying to diagnose by sound and by turning this way and that.It makes a grinding kind of noise and sounds like it could be the gears but in my case it was'nt.The sound appears to be coming from centre dashboard low down near gear lever.the noise can stop and then start again.I drove 11 miles and not a sqeak then it just started again. It's not a controllable noise.

Now the good news. The clip costs 90p but to fit it you have to remove the underneath heat shield to access it.Not a big job for someone willing to crawl underneath but suggest having room to work so a ramp is best, but caution using jacks and jack stands.Always ensure vehicle is stable and safe before venturing under the car.

somtimes applying the brake whilst moving slowly will change the nature of the noise, if you can hear it over the warning chime. this would be used for diagnostic purposes but i am sure we are way past that.

on a seperate note i pity all then general garages who have to diagnose these faults, specialist knowledge and experience are everything - add on a website like this and suddenly anything seems easy.

I think Alex that a few post that we have had in this last two weeks really shows how true that is,, it is suicide for the owners of the cars in some cases.

Even my little local garage will often ask me about things when an MB comes in, and everyone is happy at the end of the day
