I have a strange rubbing/clicking noise that appears on my W203 C-Class when the car is moving and varies in volume and resonance as I increase in speed - It appears to be coming from the instrument cluster area (believe instrument cluster is all electronic with only speed needle a moving part). Very annoying and proving difficult to track down - Any suggestions?

Could the noise be the usual problem where the parking brake cable comes adrift and is catching the prop shaft.

(think it is the parking brake cable, any way, something does)

TY for your reply. Car was in garage yesterday, for different falut, and I mentioned the noise &, having read previous threads, the possibility of it being the parking brake cable. They had a look in the foot pedal area near the steering column and said everything seemed ok - foot brake ioperation appears normal. Should they have been looking under the car? Anyway I agreed that they have a deeper look when car is serviced in 500 miles. That said, the noise is driving me crazy and I'm concerned that if it is the cable rubbing then it'll wear/break if I don't get it fixed ASAP.

Yes its under the car by the heat shields and propshaft, very simple to fix.

Just had it at local tyre/brake garage who've told me that it's not the cable or clip as the foot brake's working fine; they were looking under the car, in the centre, towards the rear wheels, is this where the clip is? should they have been looking towards the front? This seems strange as the noise seems to eminating from the centre console in the direction of the audio unit (It's difficult to tell where exactly when driving!!). All I can add at this stage is that the noise sounds like a piece of card rubbing on a fan would souund and for some strange reason dissapears when I turn sharply to the left at speed.

If this is the problem its at the front end under the seats.

Do a search "clicking noise" there are around 20 answers.

TV thanks for your response - the closest I've got with searching "clicking nosies" is that best bet is the parking brake/cable. Anyway, after a long afternoon soul searching I'm now convinced that the noise is coming from below the gear lever somewhere (auto box) and appears to get worse when I go round a right hand bend and virtually dissapear when I go round a left hand bend. Could this this still be the brake cable or clip rubbing at this location?
