having recently installing a cd player in my newly purchased car, I now find that the electric windows only work when the door is open, clearly something to do with the interior light switch. how on earth are they connected. (The cd player might be purely coincidence)

Don't get this one, you could hold the switch in, mounted in the A pillar and test then without closing the door

The windows on your car will normally operate with the ignition off and the door open. If they worked properly before the Cd was fitted I would pull it out and check the wiring,there is a lot of the stuff in there.
