"Stubby" telephone aerial ON the roof?

Can anyone tell me why the "stubby" ariel is now on the roof, when in the past it was a neat rod on top of rear window.
Why the change?. Does it do anything other than telephone reception?.

Depends on your car, but most these days incorporate the GPS received for your SatNav as well as Phone antenna.

Both Mercedes and BMW previously said that warranty could be void if a tekephone antenna was fitted to the rear window rather than a body mount.
One thing about rear window mount antennas is that the silicone sealant which is used to fix them to the glass has a tendancy to bleed down the screen. Most of the time you cannot see it however when the rear window is wet you can see it by the way the water sits on the glass.

The car will have the optional MB Telephone Pre-Wire, as well as possibly having command fitted.

In regards to the "black stubby" aerial on the rear window. I have a '06 S600 the garage door hit the aerial and cracked the mount. How difficult is it to repair and can it be a diy?
