These numbers on car types, such as R170 or W120, I realise it nails it down to a specific model and time build but where do they come from?

Sorry to be so naive! I'm relatively new so be gentle...

The first numbers are the model designation as given by Mercedes. The next three numbers given further detail as to engine and build.

Firstly I dont think its a stupid question, but there is nothing in the chassis number (VIN) to identify country of origin - as far as I know. And im sure Mercedes would not advertise this. Anyone else with an answer?

I suppose I should have added, and how do I find out what mine is? For example, my SLK 200K chassis number starts WDB170 but there is no R there, so I can see where the 170 comes from , but assuming it's an R170, as it's similar to others where does the R come from?

Thanks for the replies folks. That basically answers it. One more question though. What's the actual point? I mean to describe a 2003 SLK 200K for example, I would have thought covered it, and people should know what kind of car you had! So why do you need an extra ID mark? Is it for the technically minded as little changes can apply in very small time frames?

A 2003 SLK200K is of far more use to me than any other number, apart from the VIN when I ask.
