Hi all

I am thinking of having a couple of days in Stuttgart before middle of May to visit the museum while the SL celebration is still on, and whilst there I would probably do the factory tour too.

Has anyone been recently? If so, any tips - especially for getting around by public transport as I don't speak a word of German!

Thanks

If you can read and follow a a tube map you will get to the museum fine.

public transport in cities is very well organised.

Enjoy the museum and the beer.

Oh and are you German, Its only Jan and you planning the local transport part now.....

I did the factory tour (and car collection back when you could) back in 1998 and it was excellent.
Didn't do the museum due to lack of time.

Ha ha, fair point. My main concern is getting from the airport to Stuttgart city centre by public transport.

I went in 2020 between lockdowns and it's excellent. Allow 4-5 hours to see it properly. Everyone speaks English as you might imagine. I drove and parked so I can't help you with public transport. There are some pictures in my reader's rides thread.

An old B-Class.
About 4 years ago, I went to the MB museum, Porsche museum and Porsche factory (Porsche visits are walking distance apart are a probably a 20 minute drive to the MB site but you probably couldn't do all 3 (properly) in a day. The AMG factory is about 30 min drive (IIRC) from Stuttgart. As stated, most (especially younger) Germans speak English and are (contrary to popular belief here) very friendly & helpful. Driving in Stuttgart is easy and we had no problem with parking either.

The thing I absolutely loved about the museum was being allowed to sit in a lovely CE ❤️ I was leaning taking photos and a lovely staff member came over and said “get in” brilliant. - great building too.

Worry not, as you'd expect their public transport is very efficient. The S Bahn (overground) from the airport to city centre is the best option. It's the S2 or S3. The U Bahn (underground though a lot is actually over too) is an another option but a bit slower.
Once in the city the U Bahn is the best way of getting around.
All the stations have machines to buy the tickets.

I did the trip last week and visited the MB museum and Porsche museum, with the MB factory tour the following day.

As many of you suggested, public transport was straightforward, cheap and reliable. The museum was excellent and has a special feature on the SL currently. The factory tour was ok but I was a little disappointed the only one they do in English lasts 75 mins, which is actually less than an hour when you take out the bus trip around the site to get into the facility.

The one in German is longer but the English speaking host was very good.

The Porsche museum is smaller than MB and to be honest I only did it because I was there and had the afternoon free. I have never particularly been into Porsche but if you are, you might think it was worth it.
