I have got hold of 12 litres of lovely Shell Helix Ultra for my W220. My local garage reckons that sucking the oil out with a vacuum thingy is the way to go and as effective as pulling the sump plug. I am not too sure about this but it does seem an quick and less messy option.

Whats the view?? ok for my SClass or should I remove the sump plug in ye olde traditional way?

Please remove the sump plug when the engine is hot, and that the sump is at the right angle to drain, then anything left in should slide out, let the plug and washer drop into the bowl, that stop it from running down you arm, and get it back later. Take the oil filter out first and it will drain faster

There aint much in it, but the plug out is superior since you can get all the old oil out.
Remove the oil filter whilst the plug is out then any drain off from the filter that may drop into the sump is also discarded.
If you can reach to remove the plug from above (after you have slackened it from below) the oil will not fall onto your hand or run down to your elbow.

I did a test once.

I Sucked out the oil on an a-class them removed the sump bung and not one drip came out.

Try it for yourself.

BTW most dealers suck the oil out.

I also suck the oil out on most German cars. This system has been commonplace on the continent for a number of years,& so the positioning of the dipstick tube & the sump shape has been factored in at the design stage for this very purpose.
As with draining the oil, always remove the oil filter before finishing emptying the sump.

There's no problem with using the dispick tube to suck the oil out.

If there's any debris in the sump which can't be sucked out, you have MUCH bigger problems on your hands rather than fretting over the niceties of oil changing methods.

If I do decide to pull the sump plug, do these cars need a crush washer to be replaced?

Just used a vacuum pump to change my oil this week. Hot fully synthetic 5w/30 oil comes out a treat via the dipstick tube on a 220 CDi engine and is syphoned off in about 5 minutes! The pumps are available from most motor factors or eBay for about £40

Just sucked out my w163 with a £36 pump from ebay. Briiliant tool! No mess and even better, I had a cup of tea while it syphoned itselfout! Great thing is you can see exactly how much oil comes out as the pump is marked for volume. No more lying on my back on a damp drive.....

i believe MB started implementing the 'suck out sump' method as a standard a few years ago. i find nothing wrong with the old gravity removal method. it cost me a few cents for the copper washer for the plug. i will stick with the older reliable method of gravity removal.
