The electric sun roof on my 190e is playing up. It tries to open but fails, I Have managed to get it to open through slapping it and flicking the switch, so the motor works. I think that some of the lining must be caught or some minor adjustment is needed. The Haynes manual has a very short section that basically tells you to forget about it and go to a dealer. But I will not give in so easily- anyone wrestled with one of these blighters to any avail?

Hi TheJim,

I had a spot of bother with the roof on my s420se 1992, it would creep very slowly and stop about 3/4 open, it would shut fine but I was worried that it was going to pack in at an unoportune moment.
Any way a good clean down of the runners and a very liberal spray of WD40) on any think that looked like 'the workings' cured the problem right away!!!

It did happen in the very cold spell we had before Christmas, when i read the service book on the car it does mention on the major services that the roof is to be lubricated and cleaned.

give it a try before yo do anything else.

good luck !!! :)

You can adjust the clutch at the rear, normally motor runs fine but clutch slips.

How do you gain access to the clutch? I presume you have to remove the headlining- gulp.

No the motor is in the boot on the n/side upper forward corner, the boot lining has a flap to allow access to the adjuster.

Cool, that is probably the last place I would ever have looked!
I shall have a prod about and see what I can fiddle with.
Cheers! :D

WD40 will not adhere to the running rails. MB do a proprietry lubricant for the job. You can probably buy a non brand lubricant from any motor factors.

Your Mercedes

there are two ways to mend sunroofs

1, take it to a sunroof specialist (or your dealer who will send it to a local sunroof specialist). this option is not cheap but guarantees a repair

2, attempt to do the job yourself without any manuals or real knowledge of how the system works, how fine the tolerances are on the moving parts and just how easily it is to break something then drive to your loacl sunroof specialist (or your dealer who will send it to a local sunroof specialist). This option will inevitably cost more than the first and will not necessarily guarantee a repair which will depend on how much damage you've done
