Hello again everyone,

The sunroof on my (W126) 1987 420 SEL will not open. I soldered a wire and repaired a short in the trunk that enabled my trunk light and sunroof motor to work. :D

The switch is functioning correctly. When I turn the key too the number two position I can hear the motor run and see the cable move forward and backwards.

The problem is that the cable is not connected.

I have done some reading on what is necessary to make repairs to this system and it all reverts back to removing the headliner. But to remove the headliner the sunroof must be opened ¾ of the way.

Question: Does any one know how to get the sunroof open when the cable is broken or not attached to the sunroof?

Hi,I dont think there is a way without removing part of the headling.it sounds like the two bolts that attach the inner cable to the sunroof slide has come off.the head lining is slotted into the roof at the rear and sides of the sunroof.and you should be able to pull it away very carefully, then try and get your hand in to pull the sunroof back.once it drops down it should be easy to slide back, then remove the sunroof lining and check the inner cable.
To remove the whole headlining is a time consuming job, and idealy the sun roof has to be open as the headlining is clamped at the sunroof sides.

just trying to be more clear ,the head ling where it joins the back of the sunroof is folded along its lenth and slid into a slot in the rear sunroof suround,if that dosnt work its a headlining out job [sorry]

Remove Headliner

Thanks Frank for your reply.

I thought that maybe someone would know of a way to release the sun roof so that it could manually be slid back to allow the head liner to be removed from the top as per MB instructions, as not to cause damage to the liner.

Maybe the stealer can expose it for a nominal fee.

Awe Crap!

If you release the rear part of the headling and the hand rails you should be able to get at the drive. If it's anything like mine you'll probably find the bracket broken. It's not a diffficult repair and IF you can just release the back of the headlining should be about 1 hours work, Fingers crossed!!!
