Hi been thinking about having the ECU remapped to increase power and fuel economy.
I have a E220cdi and I have found it is slighty under powered for the size of car. I don't drive fast but it feels a bit slugish on take off but is fine once you get going.
Has anybody had this modification done and what they think of the results.
I'm looking for feedback good and bad so I can make a decision.
The questions I'm looking to be answered are does it boost fuel economy does the car need more regular services what are the draw backs.
I already know they maybe an issue with MB warantee.
Cheers Assad

performance chip

I am also concerned about a lack of power from standing start to get away on some busy roundabouts. Does anyone have information on performance chips. They vary in price a bit and not enough information to know what is good and what is not

Chips are excellent and will give more power. They may give improved MPG but only on a manual. On an auto, you'll probably drop a few mpg as you can't take advantage of the increased torque.
They work by increasing the fueling and some by increasing the turbo pressure, effectively overriding the de-tune the manufacturers build in to give better reliability in areas of the world where maintenance isn't as good as here.
The only real downside is increased wear on the injectors and some increased noise.

Do tell your insurance co though. They are hot on these things now and obviously, in almost all cases, they invalidate your warranty.

I'm not sure what you mean about lack of power though. The 220 is perfectly adequate. Yes there is turbo lag but you can adapt your driving technique to get around that (ok mine is a 270 but I floor it 1/2 sec or so before I need to go and she tears off like a scalded cat).

Thanks

Are any better than others. They all claim to do the same thing but vary in price by hundreds of £'sss.

Hi,

I had my last car remapped. Was a VW Passat 130 sport. Overall was very pleased with results. Remap took the car to approx 180BHP and about 300lbs torque. Angle tuning who did the remap said this was a mild remap and the engine could be comfortably taken to 190 to 200 BHP. I was more interested in optimum running rather than out and out performance.

Much better performance and also better economy. ( I would even say that Passat was quicker than my current SL320) Only thing I had of concern was clutch slip when you booted it a lot. The clutch was the original one and the car was 5 years old. I would have looked at upgrading the clutch if I kept it.

With a bit of negociation my remap cost £300, which was much cheaper than some of the bigger companys like superchips.

I would consider doing it again if I had a diesel, however I would stick with a mild remap. If done properly you will be amazed at results.

Most diesels these days do perform well when re chipped, there are some MB approved ones now

speed buster chip

Hi there; I managed to get a speed buster chip off e-bay second hand for my e220 cdi it fits on to the end of the commonrail and takes seconds.
Now my car has much more low down grunt and at the last mot lower emissions than when new according to the tester.
Best of all it only cost £75 because the guy selling it made a spelling mistake on the ad so I was the only bidder on a £345 chip.
Recently had car in to MB for warranty work on the tin rust and they was not bothered at all.

the BHP went up from 150 to 170 on the E class 220 engines in 2006 - there was no increase in cc, so guess they played with the ECU to get this?
