Hi All,

I have an '89 300CE which I use for towing a heavy motorcycle trailer (plus luggage). This gives the rear suspension a hard time and consequently it sits pretty low at the back. Is there a cost effective way I should deal with this? Any advice or recommendations would be enormously appreciated.

There should be no more than about 70kg of downforce on the rear tow hook. Even so, the rear supsension springs will suffer with time an then you'll need new ones.

Hi Nik,

What ever you do. Don't use non MB springs. They are no good whatsoever. Get the genuine mb ones. About £33.00 each. If you want stiffer ones then ask your MB dealer for the ones for towing. If you require stiffer than these. Ask your MB dealer for springs fitted to African cars where the roads are a little less plesant!!! But they are available. Don't even think about fitting self leveling. Its not practical.

Not quite true Andy not all after market springs are bad....plenty of good manufacturers out there...

I have lowered well well well over a thousand cars in my time (granted mostly Fords).... I have seen a few problems with realy cheap springs (they're usually the non progressive type ) and give nasty ride quality . I've never seen a TUV aproved set break yet......now cheap shocks thats a realy bad idea on any car.....

Hiya White

I stand by my remarks, concerning normal ride height springs. I have not come across a good set for MB yet. In my experience they just don't last. And soon back in the same position . Ie with the back end on the floor. Or the front end on the arches.

Eitherway its up to you. I give you my 25yrs of MB experience.

Thanks for your advice guys. I'll most likely pay my local Mercedes dealer a visit, see what they can offer.

Any recommendatins for upgraded after-market shocks? I'd like to lose the wallowing!
