Makes more sense than electric vehicles and their required (and currently missing) infrastructure. Oil companies have the storage, distribution networks and the sales sites and will not want to lose their market share so hydrogen makes sense for them.

Interestingly - Switzerland has a hydroelectric system that can essentially provide 'free' hydrogen so it may work well
