Hi could anyone give me some advice / experience on the below, please?

Sometimes when 'taking off' from the lights (some next to you trys to race you!!) it takes off at a good speed, other times not responsive as others. So, what I'm asking is: Whats the best way to get my e270 to take off fast as it can? And when to hit the kick down - straight away or after a certain speed?

Many thanks

Foot to the floor with the accelerator then engage 'D' and watch the smoke from your spinning rear wheels! and then off to your nearest MB dealer to order a new gearbox. (-:

Lost on the A303 :o)
1) Depress brake
2) Engage "D"
3) Release brake
4) Drive to dealership and trade in for E63 AMG.

In theory you can sit on the accelerator at 3500rpm with one foot on the brake pedal but you are not doing the car any good.

Selecting 1st and controlling the gears manually might be your best bet.

Left foor hard on the brake pedal, right foor hard on the loud pedal, let the revs build and lift your left foot.

I've tried it on the Shelsley Walsh hillclimb course (I wouldn't dream of doing it on public roads:rolleyes:) and the results are pleasntly scary. The track is only about 10 feet wide and there are places where I am made very aware that the track is not as wide as the W129 is long!

There is no way I would recommend this as a daily practise unless you have very deep pockets and no empathy with your car.

Hello,

Don't know if its quicker but I start my bus in the tiptronic mode (1) and then just floor it changing up right on the redline. If I want to go quickly....

Works quite well?

I mean my bus is hardly quick but for its size it seems to go quite well using this method?

Hi Len,
With a my CDI, I don't use kickdown off the lights. 1st is too short for any decent progress and the 270 has enough torque for 2nd. Add in the time for 1st to engage and you're sitting there waiting.
If I need really fast take off what I do is hit the throttle a second or so early. All the way to the floor but not on to kick down, and always in S mode.
Not much happens for that 1st second, after which the rear tyres normally ignite and we're off. Timing it right is quite tricky though.

The later cdis are more progressive and can be driven as normal but generally kickdown off the line, even in a petrol auto is counter productive IME.

If its auto box just floor it. But make sure its in "S" mode to get best results.

Not something I would personally do as I like my car.

Have you tried a VW with DSG gearbox, I think it changes gear in about 0.1 of a second

I'm not sure but i think that 2nd gear is the default when you pull away from stationary......i noticed on mine that when stationary if i use the 'tiptronic' and select 1st and then go back to 'D' the car pulls away in 1st rather than 2nd.
Try it.

Why not just let them go, You get to keep your licence while watching a prat heading for a fine and points on their licence.

Fit a Sprintbooster to it - It will totally transform the the way the car takes off.

sbc hold is great for those childish moments too.
just set it then rest your right foot on the throttle. As the lights hit amber you just drop the pedal and you're off, whilst the opposition are still moving their feet around and twiddling gearknobs.
fun - when its safe to do so.
I did it this evening with a cheeky bugger who decide he wouldn't que with us lowlife and could simply tear off at the lights and go straight on from a right turn lane (though he did seem a little less enthusiastic when passed 1/2 mile of traffic only to find a merc at the end of the queue) . By leaving before he could get moving, I was able to hold him off and still remain under the speed limit. Very satisfying, if a bit childish :)

When I was young and foolish with a lot more disposable income than I have now, I owned a Pontiac Transam 455 Super Duty and a Mustang Mach One, I used to select drive, press the brake pedal as hard as I could, wind the gas up to full bore until the car was really straining at the leash then release the brake, the take off was impressive to say the least, much tail wagging, smoke and squealing! I got through tyres at an alarming rate but the tough as old boots General Motors and Ford three speed auto 'boxes never complained once!

On the subject of auto 'boxes, I was a member of the American Auto Club of Great Britain at the time and attended loads of rallys, run what you brungs at Santa Pod and various meets, I can't ever remember hearing of a failed gearbox on any American car, you could fill them with readily available Ford or GM spec. fluid too. Maybe there was a lesson to be learned there for Mercedes!
