Is this a DIY job, or would I need special tools of any sort? If it is DIY, is there a step-by-step guide available?

I suspect the noise you are getting is combustion knock. It is quite rare for the lifters/tappets to wear out premeturely on the 300td

As far as I am aware, everything to do with the fuel supply has been checked to the minutest detail as the indie had a few issues with the pump etc. So I can only assume it's mechanical.

After listening to Parrot of Doom's audio clip, I'm convinced there is more work to do

Put your finger or a screwdriver on the injector lines. If you can feel knocking, theres your problem.

There is a tapping sensation form the lines but I think it's the general activity of the engine doing it. I still believe the noise to be coming from under the cover, having put my ear close to it. Would it make sense to post up an audio file? Could anyone tell anything from that?

Back to my original line of thought; is changing the lifters a DIY project? (mediocre technical ability) or can they be adjusted? What about additives?

You need to remove the cams to do this, not a big job. it all depend on how confident you are with a spanner?

As long as it's just standard tools then I'm willing to have a go. What about adjustments or are the parts all preset? I don't think there's a Haynes manual for the W210, so do I need to follow a procedure or technique?

I'll try and do a step by step guide and post it up if it's successful!

I have taken the plunge and tried a mix of Lidl's finest rapeseed veggie oil and diesel 50% / 50%. After putting it in, i drove the car about 2 miles and immediately noticed that the engine runs a lot quieter!

I thought I had a tappet problem. Was the noise I had more injector related? If so, do I need to be speaking to my indie as he had a third party to recondition the injectors when I had my engine rebuilt a few weeks ago.

I have the same problem

Hi Lyndon!

I think I enjoy the same problem as you with my E300TD (1998) 120K. When I use a high concentration of Diesel Redex the tappy noice at low revs gets quiter, doesn't completely go.

I really thought it was the tappits. But not so sure now.

Im interested in your last post, since you said that you had your injectors reconditioned as I was thinking about doing the same?

When you mixed veg oil with diesel, does it mix well? Or does the veg oil just sit on top of diesel or the reverse?

Does anyone else here know?

Take Care all, by the way I'm new the Mercs, and only had mine 1 month, but its an absolutely brilliant car. Very smooth and quite, and I love the look of it.

Andrew

I have been running on a mixture of diesel and oil now for a month or so and am still amazed at how much quieter the engine is. I've settled at around 25% oil to 75% diesel, which allows for easy starting (not too viscous) along with quieter running. All apparently with no adverse side effects!

When filling up, for example, I'll use 30 ltrs of diesel and top it up with 10 ltrs veg oil at home, straight into the tank. I think it mixes straight away with no 'separation' (oil and water effect)

Is there any one else with any ongoing veg oil successes or problems?

Hi

Yes Im going to try the same.

I was going to experiment with the seperation issue in a glass tumbler. But might not bother now since you say it doesn't seperate.

Does MPG seem the same?

When you say its quiter, does it get rid of that tappy noice at low revs? (500-1100rpm).?

Many thanks,
Andrew

Keep an eye on the fuel pump and the lines around it. If the fuel is too think you'll start to notice weeps around that area.

Parrot of Doom - question...

I see by reading many of your posts that you're extremely knowledgable with the E300 Turbo Diesel W210.

Can I ask you, have you been using veg oil? - Would you say that the quitening of the engines' tappy noice is down to using the oil, or in the long run would the noise come back until the injectors are overhauled or replaced?

If I was to install all the kit required to convert the engine to run on veg oil, in which direction would you point me to understand which pipes do what at the filter? I can see so many different fuel lines and am totally confused as to which comes from where? I would simply need to know presumely which pipe comes from the tank and the return pipe.

Lots of questions I know! But I would be grateful for any advice you may have.

Kindest Regards,
Andrew
