I have a 1991 190E and I was driving with my window down and could hear a tap tap tap tap tap comming from the wheels on the drivers side (think its the front). At first I thought it was a stone in the tyre but theirs no stone in sight... Its not the engine / gearbox as I rolled down a hill out of gear and as I speeded up the tapping speeded up.

any help would be great :D

thanks :)

no, checked... also, it taps about 3 of 4 times per a complete rotation of the wheel...

are your brakes vented? maybe a stone stuck between the 2 sides of the discs?

Why not change your wheel and try it again.

Put your spare wheel on in place of the one where you think the noise is coming from and take it for a drive. If the noise has gone you will know that it is the wheel that you have taken off that is causing the noise. Then while the wheel is off you can examine it more minutely for foreign bodies. This hot weather you can sometimes pick up molten tar from the road surface which can take time to wear off and this makes a smacking sound as you drive along. Otherwise as aforesaid I would have thought a stone, a nail or something similar in the tyre (which you have already checked for I know).

If the noise hasn't gone then you'll then need to investigate the brake pads and discs, or the wheel bearings but chances are it'll be the wheel hopefully.

Good luck. Let us know how you get on. Ron

If the frequency is higher than the wheel rotation by 3 to 4 times I would check the driveline , propshaft bearings, etc., or possibly something caught round the propshaft.

was going to check it today but its pouring down with rain... Might get one of the mechanics at work to look at it on saturday :)

could be something cought as the sound sometimes sounds like the ticking noise that them things make that you can buy for BMX's that go inbetween the spokes and tap as the wheel rotates

Why not just jack it, and spin the wheels, being rear wheel drive they do spin easily.

going to do it sometime :)... I think its something to do with the brakes or something in that area as this morning it was quite cold, almost ice on the window and the noise was gone, but when it started to warm up from driving the noise seemed to start again (as things expand when they get hot etc).
