I'm due to collect a car tomorrow and have arranged the insurance to swap over from my part-ex also tomorrow. Do you think I will be able to tax the new car online / via the telephone or will I be stuck with no tax because the insurance won't register in time? More Than insurance said it could take up to 7 days to register on the MIB database!

You no longer need insurance to tax a vehicle.

Back in March, I (ie the dealer did) taxed my car at the dealers on-line .... I'd only just phoned my insurance to swap it over.

I'm willing to be proved wrong .... but I don't think on-line tax looks at the insurance any more

    As above.
If collecting from a trader/dealer, the car can be taxed and paid for online .

    From the Gov website

How do you tax a car you have just bought?
To tax your vehicle online go to www.gov.uk/tax-disc - you'll need one of the following:
    1. 16 digit reference number on your vehicle tax renewal letter (V11)
    2. 11 digit reference number on your log book (V5C)
    3. Or, if you've just bought the vehicle , the 12 digit reference number on your new keeper supplement (V5C/2)

I’m sure you need insurance in place to tax a car.

Tax online easy peasy - also if you use direct debit you won’t be billed for a few days... so you could drive it home then cancel the direct debit and SORN it...

When we bought the GT3 in Feb, the taxing was easy. The DVLA couldn't swap our number plate though...

Thanks for all the replies - I think! With everything going digital it would seem logical that taxing a car wouldn't need the gov to check anything since ANPR cameras interrogating all the databases would alert Gov / Police if a car did not have the full complement and fines could be issued accordingly. I'll find out lunchtime tomorrow whether it's easy or not....

I know of someone who didn’t have tax or mot for over 6 months and then didn’t have insurance for 8 months. They don’t have tax now and haven’t had for 8 months. How they get away with it or sleep at night I don’t know. I doubt I could drive to the end of the road before my car was crushed

I presume they don't register the car to their address?

Yes but how old is the Google answer. If the rules have changed and Google didn't know/care, they will be giving out duff info.

You're best going to .gov website and even then they're not always up to date.

Mercedes taxed my car last year without insurance when I bought it. They did it online and I raised the question about insurance at the time and they said it wasn’t required. The tax went through no problem at all.

RFT on-line is easy, even for an old fart like me. One thing you might want to consider is a standing order where a fee is taken monthly and you don't have to even think about it when the time comes to re-tax the car. :)

Don't know where you found that but it's wrong. I'm not lying, I taxed a car without insurance a couple of months ago.

And they charge you for the privilege too .... lots will give a discount for paying monthly by direct debit.
