Taxing a new to me car

My "new-to-me" was bought at auction. Without V5C. So probably a re-possession as DVLA search then (three weeks ago) showed VEL valid to October. Have had a letter (V62AL) from DVLA saying that "my" (read the auction company's application) for a new V5C will be actioned on 8th August. They go on to say quote: "You will need to wait for your V5C to tax the vehicle unless you have the new keeper slip (green slip) of the V5C".

Being away from home, I might not get the V5C in time before my return in September...

No need for insurance proof for tax on line but you do have to have a valid MOT if applicable.

Don't know where you found that but it's wrong. I'm not lying, I taxed a car without insurance a couple of months ago.

As it is all on-line your Insurance details are picked up by the DVLC when you make application

And they charge you for the privilege too .... lots will give a discount for paying monthly by direct debit.

Indeed they do but it's done and you don't have to even think about it, no fear of forgetting

I changed cars 3 months ago.
I taxed it with the dealer online and then went outside and sat in the car to ring my insurance and change it over.
Defo can tax before insurance. I did it.

I can also confirm that a car can be taxed before it is insured.
Last year my father bought a car from a dealer as a gift for somebody. They didn't know about the car and no insurance had been arranged beforehand. The dealer did it online before we took the car away.

So, the answer is Yes, you can technically tax a vehicle without any insurance! The dealer confirmed this but says an MOT is required if one is needed. MOT's do hit the GOV database immediately so that makes sense.
