Does anyone know what the function of a Mass Air Flow Sensor (or meter??) is on the car?

It's part of the engine management system. The ECU receives various inputs to help it decide how much fuel to supply and when. The MAF informs it (I think) of how much air/fuel mixture is being drawn through the throttle body. The ECU takes this into acount plus the angle of the throttle, speed of change, air temp etc etc.

If you MAF is on its way out, change it as otherwise you get spurious readings and strange performance glitches.

Om my current C43 the MAF went at about 61k. Same on the last one, similar miles.

My one has just gone at 54k. I thought it was the gearbox as the car seemed to have no kickdown/acceleration getting worse. It also seemed to be hunting for gears. Expensive part though

Familiar symptoms.......still, you should be ok for another 50k miles. Plus you have the novelty of having all your V8 performance back.

It should have been worth a clean first, as Parrots thread in engine sec, the other alterative is to get the insert from Bosch, and fit it into your own casing.

All sorted now and the car is working as it should. After some careful negotiating to get it as a "off the clock" job at the main dealer, it is like a dream
