a 230e merc....in winter weather at approx 15C what should the engine temp get to? If i run my car in 'e" it only runs at 50C but in 'S' it runs at 80C.... normal?

50C is way too low, 80 is about right (maybe a bit low). The change from "E" to "S" should make no difference whatsoever.......you've got an electrical problem.

I'll bet the engine is running at the same temperature, just the gauge thinks it isn't.

Unlike mine .....

sits anywhere between 80 and 130 (i know the scale goes to 120 - but it looks like the needle is going as far as it can).

It's clearly not a temperature problem as a needle just jumps suddenly up and down.
