Should the safety equipment not have stopped the Tesla before it hit the concrete barrier?

And no one has ever seen a petrol or diesel powered car catch fire ...
That was exactly my first thought. “Car with gallons of highly inflammable liquid on board crashes and busts into a ball of flames!”

Is problematic in that it’s quite a lot easier to make a petrol tank crashproof than stop a solid state battery from catching fire or exploding. It’s a matter of rate of energy release. To give some idea, a 15 gallon petrol tank holds 10x the potential energy of a 50kW.hr. However....

A petrol tank may spill and its spilt contents may ignite. This is combustion, and it is almost certain to occur outside of the fuel tank due to modern design trends. But a solid state battery may go high order and release its energy in a very short time period, equivalent to an explosion of upto 430kg of TNT.

Zafiras had a tendency to self immolate...
Scimitars too, suffered petrol pipe fractures by the carb, would mist the engine bay, and bingo your fibreglass car was suddenly a rolling chassis

Wasn’t aware of Zafiras. But the Scimitar took planned obsolescence one stage too far!!!

Interesting...… It says it was on flames AFTER crashing so that could happen to any car. What I do find truly staggering and unbelievable is the effort reported to control the fire.

Austrian fire service reported it took five fire engines, 35 crew members and two hours to finally get the fire under control.

I can already hear insurance companies calculating the increased risk and putting up their premiums

If you recall when Hamster pranged that Rimac, the (Swiss?) fire service reported it took them 5 days to fully extinguish the car as battery packs kept reigniting.
