Hi All

Thanks to everyone who has offered help and advise but I have had it with ebay. The 2nd time I have auctioned my 280CE and twice it has been bid on and sold to idiots. Not just the one who bid but the 2nd and 3rd chance buyers as well.

Is it me? Well I don't care anymore.

If there is anyone out there who wants a 1978 280CE and is prepared to give me £50 (£50 is what the scrap man has offered me) towards my £140 storage cost, please get in touch otherwise this is one Mercedes that will be going to the scrap yard next weekend. I do not want to see this car scrapped but I can not afford to keep.

I have to wonder if there is anyone out there who's word means anything.

Kind regards

Neill

If I lived closer and had space on my driveway, I'd snap it up!!

A lovely looking Merc that deserves a new home.

Good luck with the sale

Don't scrap it. What a nice looking old bird it is. Try selling it in the Adtrader. What kind of planet are people on to waste peoples' time?

You have certainly had some bad luck. I have sold a couple of jukeboxes (for vinyl records) on ebay with fairly substantial sums involved and not a hitch on either. I also deal in other small low-cost collectibles (over three years now) and never had a serious problem. Have you tried contacting any of the lower bidders since the sale? I note two in particular, asa390 and blakenwode look good bets with good buying history and both with 100% positive feedback. Maybe offer at a substantial discount on end-price?
Good luck.

Thanks Stevie but I can't keep throwing good money after bad, each week costs another £15 in storage plus the cost of the ad in Trader. Where does it end? I should have cut my losses and scrapped it before Christmas and been £100 better off.

As for what you say Tom, I have tried on 2 occasions to go to the lower bidders, some have not replied and one agreed at £100 lower than the end price and then the following day pulled out of the deal.

As Malcolm points out, you have to stop and that time is now. I have a history with this car, I was there at the age of 8 when my Dad bought it and that is why it hurts so much to let it go in the first place but its salt in the wound to be mucked about in the selling process.

It won't put me off buying on ebay but it sure has put me off selling but then my word means something to me, even if it doesn’t matter to anyone else.

Thanks for the kind words on the car

Regards

Neill

Hi Hairnet600

No I still have it. I have had Joe in Ireland say he is interested but no definites yet.

It must go by this weekend 4th Feb or someone pay the storage costs to retain it for any longer.

Thanks

Similar ebay experience

Sorry to hear about your ebay grief. I've had the same experience selling a W123 280TE. Sold it twice to idiots who never showed and one left negative feed back against me. I've learned the hard way that you have to be ruthless with ebay and simply reject all bids that are a) outside the UK b) from anyone with less than 5 positive feedbacks c) from anyone with ANY negative feedback d) from anyone you to believe to be under the age of 18 (one of my "high" bidders turned out to be a school boy "having a laugh" at my expense.) Hope you find a taker for your car soon.

Hi
Just a quick note to say CE still not sold but mostly thanks to Parrot of Doom for the introduction in to Pistonheads.com, I'd never seen the site before and I'm very impressed. I have put an ad on just in case, more places the better I always say. Thanks Parrott.
Kind regards
Neill

Man, I'm so sorry. If you were in Bulgaria I would probably have bought it. My father also had one w123 but it was 250 automatic, same colour. If you want 50 for it, why nobody wants it??? Damn, it's so beautiful. On the market here, people sell w123 round 1000 euro, and it holds the price only because it is a Merc.

Your Mercedes
as stated
Just curious - but wondering if the fact that the rear wheel arch does NOT SHOW the nice wheel if this has affected peoples perception. Perhaps in hurriedly reading it i missed a point. Are the wheels sold with the Car?
Seems a bargain to anyone with the space though I recall looking at a 230CE once and finding that the Floor pan was paper thin and so extensive work presumeably is necessary. Nevertheless to someone with the ability to weld it looks a very nice buy. Oh, only other question, will an HPI report show up a history?

The end is nigh

Thanks to Bliznak for his kind words, pity I do not have time to take to Bulgaria.

In answewr to your questions Stuart, the wheels come with the car, I put them on as I got them from a friend for nothing when I thought I was going to restore th car myself. Floor pan is fine. My man who does all of my work says it would cost me about £500 to get it through an MOT, mostly welding and that is a specialist garage so if you can weld, not a lot. Who said you don't get much for £50 these days?

I don't know what an HPI would turn up, as I have never done one but this car has never left my family since New in 1978, it has had two private registrations, My Father's and my Grand Father's and I now have his number on my SL. Other than that the only changes to the Reg docs are when we have changed the company name, when we sold the company and then into my name.

Thanks for the interest.
Regards
Neill

The End

Dear All

Thanks for all the input on this Thread. I just wanted to confirm that my 1978 280CE slipped away this afternoon for £30 and collection by the Scrap man in Rugby. All that is left is the paperwork and £111 storage to pay for.

RIP

Kind regards

Neill

There has been a reprieve.

The Governor (Not Arnold Schwarzenegger) called through at the eleventh hour and granted a stay in execution.

If all goes according to plan Felix from Brighton will collect the car on Sunday and is looking to restore it back to its former glory.

It was on www.w123.net where Felix had seen the car so thanks for saving the day.

Mind you, knowing my luck he won’t turn up.

Neill
