Quite a few cyclists now have Insurance as well, mostly the ones who belong to cycling clubs, and are serious about the sport.

....you cite some stupid cycle lanes,

So I was guilty of citing some stupid lanes and double guilty of using Google maps images to show them. Here are a few pictures of the exact same stupid cycle lanes that I cited, except this time they are my images from today, and showing stupid illegally parked cars in the stupid cycle lanes

Some cyclists do indeed have insurance, most will be part of their general household insurance but any serious cyclist will have insurance through the BCF or CTC. However we are not required by law to have insurance. we don't even have to pay road tax on bicycles, they don't require expensive petrol/diesel, we don't even have registration plates so we're difficult to trace when we cycle through red lights or on the pavements, we don't require a license and don't have to sit any test before being allowed out to play with the cars

We can legally filter traffic jams saving valuable time whilst vehicle drivers have to sit there watching us in our lycra and getting irate, we get to go to the front of the traffic light queue and sit in the ASL box so that we can hold up the traffic behind us when the lights change, we can legally cycle along bus/taxi lanes avoiding further delays, we don't pollute the environment and the best of all the cycling malarky is we can eat all the pies and cakes we like without having to worry about putting on weight. When did you last step onto the bathroom scales :razz::razz:

Oh did I mention we can ride 2 abreast:cool:

I'm afraid these many pictures show a person seemingly "looking" for an incident.

The reality of the situation, that putting an egg in a bag of hammers is fundamentally a situation for the egg to go on the defensive is lost under a sea of perceived or otherwise "rights"

I shall continue to ride my bike not wishing to exercise my apparent "right" to be run over.

Actually you couldn't be further from the truth. These many pictures are actually screen shots from onboard video, the reason there are these many pictures is to show the high number of wrongs that motorists do putting cyclists at risk.

Forget the parked cars etc, I would have thought the state of the road surface would be the biggest hazard to cyclists in these pictures!

Those cars illegally parked in the cycle lanes are a disgrace.

Luckily they didn't get in your way as they were not parked well out into the middle of the road.
I can understand cyclists getting very annoyed about them if the cars stop cyclists from using the cycle lanes, but I fail to understand why the ones that refuse to use them (because they are full of debris that gives them punctures etc) give two hoots about it.

I went for a 20 mile ride today using all available places set aside for cyclists.
Unfortunately there are nowhere near enough of them.
My concern is there never will be enough as long as cyclists refuse to use them.

I am sure we could fill these and many more pages with cyclists behaving badly but why would we ?

We already know that all users of the roads are a bunch of saints and sinners the problem is so many cyclists are so obsessed with their "rights" that they think their lycra will magically protect them from a tonne or more of fast moving metal.

The law may support a 100 kg bike and rider riding down the middle of the carriageway at a third of other road users speed but common sense should prevail.

"3,401 cyclists were seriously injured last year on Britain’s roads, a jump of 8.2 per cent on the year before. This was not a blip. They have increased in nine out of the last 10 years, and are up significantly from 2,174 serious injuries in 2004"

True, unlike the queue of cars behind you waiting for an opportunity to pass who are really polluting the environment while stuck at 10mph on country roads.

The reality

I spent the weekend at my son's place in Teddington. We drove through various local roads there this morning whilst doing some errands.

Referring to the 1.5 metres clearance which will be required to pass a cyclist, we concluded that, as long as there is oncoming traffic on any of these roads, it will be illegeal to overtake a cyclist and, on many of these narrow roads with cars parked on either side, a passing distance of 1.5 metres is unachievable.

At long last, someone's speaking some sense

Sadly though motorists don't look at it like this and are willing to do anything to get past

My view is cyclists shouldn't be riding in the middle of the road unless it's needed to stop drivers squeezing past when there's insufficient space (even if they do have the right to take up the full lane at all times).
If it's unachievable to pass them safely then don't pass!
Better for you to set off a bit earlier to give yourself the necessary time than endanger a cyclist.

By the way, I drive a van for work and I always give at least as much room to cyclists as I would to any other road user.

1.5 metres is probably less than I've ever passed a cyclist whilst driving.

Don't worry any sensible cyclist will notice they are holding up traffic and pull over and let you pass, wouldn't they ?

I would imagine as many as there are slow drivers who pull in for faster cars behind them... I find slow cars to be more prevalent than slow cyclists...
