The E55 AMG 2002 model.

Hi, I am in the process of buying a E55 AMG 2002 model Mercedes. I must say I have never owned a Mercedes of any kind myself but my father did many yeras ago it was a 280SE touring and it was a fantasic car as i remember. what I would like to know is what the drive quality is of the car and just what you E55 AMG guys make of your car's. I must also add that I am a true petrol head and was wondering if the sound of the Big V8 can be heard from such a refined car. Any advice gladly taken.

Having owned a few high performance cars i do appreciate the expensive running costs that I would face owning such a vehicle. I was just hoping for a little inspiration, before I go ahead and buy the e55 AMG. Also what I should look for or hear for on the test drive. Many thanks Tom.

Only ever had a test drive in one.

For that age of vehicle get a full inspection - rust is an issue with some cars - wheel arches, boot lock, door tops (under seals) front cross member.

Don't even consider one without full history.

Gear change should be smooth, both on upchange and when slowing down. check to see when/if the gearbox oil has ever been changed.

ensure that all of the electric goodies work (including windows, sunroof typically fails but can be fixed - see DIY thread - good bargaining point).

Brakes, tyres, exhaust expensive so give them a good check. Aftermarket parts aren't so good.

Engine is pretty unburstable, it should run smoothly and be quiet on tick over. On that age of vehicle engine mounts may need replacing if they are original. Again easy enough to do but good bargaining point.

You'll get to hear a bit of induction and exhaust noise when accelerating, but it's not as loud as some may wish for.
