Flumoxed by how to replace the interior mirror on a W124 I came up with this trick which may be of use to others. You take a table fork, cut off three of the four prongs, compress the mirror spring in a vice (gently) and insert the prong in the gap at the end of the spring where the brass stud shaft meets it. With the fork curving downwards as you offer up the mirror it's now possible to insert the uncompressed stud fully and silde home the compressed one whilst deftly withdrawing the fork. Simples.

Does the type of fork matter?

Does it have to be solid silver, or can you get away with EPNS?

The material is obviously a commercially sensitive matter since much has been spent in product testing of this special tool, and, in common with Mercedes- Benz own policy, we find that only by using genuine special tools from yours truly can the integrity and lifetime reliabiility of your treasured automobile be guaranteed. I therefore recommend that you buy this unique equipment only from this genuine recognised source at the bargain price of £38 (46 euros) each, inc P&P UK.

Supplies limited until I pop in to the Oxfam shop again...........

Ohh bugger.....

I have a variety of the old bone handled table knives, each with the end bent at different angle for prissing off panels etc
