My w220 was "written off" years ago Skidded on ice, one wing hit a bin. Car spun and other wing hit a bus. The damage was both wings, some suspension parts, alloy, airmatic struts and the head lamps.
What writes the car off is the cost to put it right (new geniune parts, labour, paint etc) vs the market value.
The car had 42K miles on it at 10 years old and is mint, I have it since almost new.
I kept the car as they value was heartbreaking. I purchased genuine wings and lamps from a car being broken and all other bits I got brand new from MB.
My indy done all the work. I kept the car and I banked 2k from the insurance.
Yes I still have the car. Yes its still mint and its on 72k and 17 years old and I love it.
So Ins co can write of the car. Nothing stopping you from keeping it.
So LK i know where you are coming from.
Good luck.
That to me points to a Can Bus problem. ( Sorry I just couldn't resist that ) Seriously though LK I hope everything works out in your favour.

I have a strong case as I was a completely innocent party (stationary, hit by a car that was pushed into me by their insured driver who admitted liability) so can push them harder to pay up to the value of the vehicle. I can also suggest to them that if they won't play nicely I'll engage an accident management company and seek a rental car and everything else I'm entitled to thus driving their cost up massively.

The BMW 5 I had when my car was hit cost £199 a day, the hire was more than the repairs!!!!!!

i have no idea to be honest or where to check. I never sent the V5 anywhere.
HPI would know, but honestly not worth checking as it would cost money, and you're not selling it.

They probably hire out Citroen C1's for £900 a day these days.

I only just caught up with this thread. Gutted for you, Alistair. I’m sure you’ll sort it out okay - just don’t get too disheartened along the way. Most important though glad that you’re okay.

Rear shunts can be very dodgy with late incidentals and if the insurer starts using the W/o words you might suddenly find your neck is aching badly!

So still not managed to get into the boot
:(
I did have a bright idea though....and got part way there.
Given the 230 boot is designed to hinge at the rear it should be possible using developer mode to fool it into believing the boot is fully closed (managed this) and then release the boot into the roof opening phase. This would then allow access from the sides of the vehicle into the boot to replace the PSE pump (or just empty the boot before it goes in). It definitely appears the PSE pump gas failed as it's not communicating to DAS or any other diagnostics and the fuse is verified good. As it stands the boot is not fully closed (soft close not pulled in).

Answers how to do this on a postcard....

And it continues....

Body shop can't get into the boot (no surprise there) so assessor has said to take it to Mercedes (to which I objected strenuously as they haven't yet agreed what they'll pay for!)

Upshot of it is that I've arranged to take it to Ian at Star to look at (thanks @star for the long chat). Only potential fly in the ointment is that the fuel flap is locked, there's not much fuel In the tank and you guessed it, the emergency release is in the boot....

{sigh}

Picked up the car from the body shop and somehow magically all the electronic gremlins have departed.
So now left with locked boot and dead parking sensors.....
I don't like when the 230 fairies visit and magically fix stuff....
