Hi all,
After reading various posts on the site I've decided to change the oil/filter on my, w/s button type 5speed auto, as its done 160k now without being touched.
I have a few query's, any ideas?

1. Am I stuck with using pricey M.B oil or is there a better/cheaper alternative?

2.Am I likely to find a drainplug for the torque converter on my car?

3. Is there anything else worth checking/cleaning in this area whilst i'm under there?

4.I'm planning on measuring the removed fluid (checked by garage recently) and refilling with same amount then getting garage to recheck..is this best route?

Any help greatly appreciated.
cheers all
Si..

Only use genuine MB fluid, filter and sump seal.

You have to rotate the engine with a spanner until the torque converter drain plug is at the bottom.

Make sure the gearbox is warm by taking it for a 10 mile drive first.

You can buy the 'measuring tool' from the dealers, check the level, warm with the engine running in netral.

agree totally with Jimmy, but just to add a couple of points....

finding the torque convertor drain plug is best done with two people - one to manually turn the engine and one to watch out for the drain plug (removing the spark plugs makes turning the engine a lot easier)

yes, take it for a 10 mile drive to "warm the oil" but when you remove the plug be very careful, tranny fluid get's VERY HOT and you can easily burn yourself, make sure you are not in the direct flow of the oil as it comes out quite rapidly :)

checking the level. you need to get the new fluid up to operating temperature. Check your manual for the exact amount to fill it with and underfill it by about half a litre (allowing for any old fluid trapped in the tranny) then take the car out for a decent length drive (10-15 miles). Then with the car parked and engine running change up and down through all the gears a few times (allowing the gearbox to engage) then check the fluid and top up as neccessary. It's better initially to slightly underfill than overfill as it's less likely to do harm and it's a lot easier to add a little fluid rather than have to remove some :)

Thanks to u both for the reply's, was gonna have a go at this over the weekend, but the weather say's otherwise!!

Just out of interest.. is the general opinion that this is worthwhile maintenance?? I'm loath to believe that M.B's oil will last forever. suppose it depends on what they class as the maximum working life for the box......just after warranty expires I expect!!!

It is worth doing especially if you plan to keep the car. The gearchanges are much smoother on mine and it's peace of mind too. I do not agree that these boxes are sealed for life, could be a short life!!
