I alwaus chuckle when I see an "ambitious" false badge because the only one being fooled is the owner themselves and most observers laugh at them as well!

Reminds me of the time when car phones started. We had a customer who sold them and he would happily give one to any of our staff because of course he made his money on his percentage of the call rates. But it was worth a chuckle to see one of our trainees cars - complete with dummy car phone in the centre console!

My Brabus Range Rover Evoque, well it was a Startech (owned by Brabus).

Bulk standard 2.2l diesel, all looks no go!

In the UK de-badging tends to be the base model whereas in Europe they de-badge the range toppers.

I think it was the last of the current series of "The Grand Tour" who did a piece on your social standing based on letters on the back of you car. It really was a thing in the UK in the 70's and 80's, no one in lane 3 of the motorway would pull over for a car behind if it didn't have front fogs or headrests (and I don't mean the skeleton headrests).
I lived in Germany for many years. It's quite normal to have new cars delivered without model number badges. This goes back to the days when badges had studs into holes in the boot-lid. Rust always starts there so 'badges' were almost an optional extra. so not just small engines trying to look big. But even top of the range models were very very often supplied with no model badges.

Many (many Many MANY) years ago. My first Merc was a 1979 123 200D (Top speed 80mph. yes the 60hp one. 0-60 in something like 30 seconds)

I'm embarrassed to say I was a wanna-be boy racer. Had the Brabus bumper covers fitted. Zender sill covers. completely dechromed and debadged and had the whole thing, bumper covers, side skirts, spoilers an all, professionally sprayed dark metallic anthracite.

Seriously. It really did look ('80's) good.

But remember. This is 1980. Back in the day when diesels were diesels and didn't feel the need for any of that new-fangle engine cover and undertray sound deadening m'larkey. When running it sounded like an empty oil barrel full of rocks rolling down a hill. Inside it didn't sound bad. Turn up the 8-track a little and you couldn't hear anything. and don't look in the mirror at that cloud of diesel smoke and it was great - as long as you didn't want to get anywhere in a hurry.

But I took the pills - and another 40 years of growing up - so I'm alright now.
