As I came out of work last night,I was a little bit embarrased as it took a couple of minutes to get the Merc open..
The original MB remote battery is on its way out(turned red in colour on the fob). And my spare is red as well!:(

So does anyone know where I can get some reasonably priced new batteries for my remotes,as I'm assuming that MB dealers charge £8,799 each plus vat for them...

What car is it for? On my C240 red means it is working fine. It only has one colour of led on the remote and it either shows (battery is fine) or doesn't (start walking home).

I have been told that MB are supposed to change the batteries in the remote when you have the car serviced but I'm not sure that is true.

If the remote is working fine (and the red light would suggest it is) then you may have a more worrying problem. See my thread on "remote not working".

If its the plastic combined IR / Ultrasonic key, and it is just the battery, then its a CR2025 and your require two. They should cost arond £3-£5 for a pack of two. Try any camera shop, or most WH Smiths / Boots type places 'ave em.

The dealers do change them at service time and charge you for the privilidge. If you do change them yourself (and it's not hard) don't leave it too long between popping the old one out and the new one in. 2 yrs is the recommended period - however that is over kill.
The red light comes on on my fob everytime I press the button, regardless of battery condition. I thought it a function of the key, an indication that it was being pressed.

Thanks for all your comments..

I opened up the remote and removed the battery.Went to Tescos and bought a replacement for £1.95!
Fitted it and it works fine.Have to agree with Blobcat that the light is still red when you push the button, even though it has a brand new battery inside..

Thanks for getting me worried about batteries. I have a CLK with a remote which looks to be solid, it has a red bit at the top which slides across to remove the emergency key, but apart from that I cannot figure out how to open it to replace batteries - any suggestionsas to how it opens???

Once you have slid out the emergency key use it to press back the (grey in my case) catch inside. The top bit of the key then slides out.

I replaced both sets of batteries ie for both keys, for £7.96 for 4 x CR2025 from Tesco

I had a similar problem trying to get into the car at the golf club on Wednesday so adjourned for a spot of impromtu lunch (the good old burying head in sand manouevre) and prayed that I would be able to get into the car an hour later.

When I eventually got in, nipped round to Tesco (leaving my friend in the car as security) and 'voila', problem solved !!
