Does anybody know the facts that surround the two Mercedes Cosworths? I hear all different types of stories from all different types of people! Basically I've heard that the torque on the 2.5-16 was all wrong and basically Mercedes discontinued it because it just wasn't 'right'! Then I heard that it was a better car than the 2.3-16, and the 2.3 just kept breaking down. Then I saw a 2.3-16 for sale on ebay and the chap selling it claimed that the 2.5-16 wasn't even a Cosworth, the engine was entirely built by Mercedes.

As a 2.3-16 owner I (obviously!) believe it is a brilliant (reliable) car..... but then people always believe their babies are the prettiest don't they!!

Any help in finding the truth would be appreciated!

Thanks.

The 2.3 was built by Cosworth the 2.5 was designed by Cosworth but built by Mercedes. The 2.5 is more "mature" than the 2.3 which is more lively in its power delivery. I understand many 2.5s had an autobox which suggests its designed as a grand tourer rather than a posh hot hatch (without the hatch!). :)

I think I have tjhat mainly right.:?

I'm on my second 190E 2.5-16 ( both manual) & I think they're brilliant cars. For a complete package of handling, balance, performance, road holding, refinement, prestige, rarity (less than 4,800 made), the ability to cover ground VERY swiftly & bullet proof durability I don't think they can be beaten. Mine cost nearly 38K new (which would have bought a small house in 1989!) & are such value for money now . If you haven't driven one yet, try to get a test drive.
Mine is a low mileage car which I only use sparingly & it makes me smile from ear to ear every time I use it.
This site has some interesting bits http://www.mercedes-cosworth.co.uk/

You can buy an outstandingly good example for a max. of 6-7,000 quid, the price of a nearly new Fiesta. That would buy you one of the best left. If you're looking for one buy the very best you can find. Service history is an absolute must. For every really good one there are ten tired, trashed, raced, wrecked, not serviced examples around. If it's cheap it's cheap for a reason.
Mine is a 1989, a standard model with no mods. & no (heavy) luxury options such as AC, electric seats ect. It's built for speed. If you want a softer luxurious car, buy a 190E 2.6.
