I just think of all of those not on a forum running around with cold engines wasting fuel, and not good for the engine either

Does this apply to petrol engines too Malcolm?

One of our cars warms up but only ever to the bare minimum on the gauge, even after a long idle it doesn't quite reach the mid position, although the fan does cut in when expected. Heat in the car is always available too, I'm guessing that somehow the engine management thinks the car still 'needs some choke' and over fuels somewhat

Petrol engines also have an optimum working temperature but unlike diesel engines it is usually around the 82-85C mark.

If your petrol engine isn't coming up to the temperature it will indeed overfuel giving poor fuel consumption in the short term and sooting the internals long term

Most of my info is based on petrol engines where around 100c is the best. What fan cuts in,, the visco if fitted or the rad fan, as rad fans are more to do with the air con pressure and temp

C270 To Overheat Or not to Overheat That is the question?

I have owned this car for about nine months now and I love it,,, It has a few niggles to iron out however. So who better to ask than other lovers of these fine cars.
Niggle one Overheating ?
Having read the thread on this subject It has cleared up a few points as My c270 estate will go from 80 on the dash to 95/98 when in traffic but goes back down to 80 on cruising along a straight road. As im as deaf as a post I cannot tell if any fan kicks in?
I was'nt sure this temp was normal but now, according to the thread, it seems that its about right I will however have the switch (or relay) checked asap.
( maybe I should also change the thermostsat soon?)
Niggle two
The dash warning ESP VISIT WORKSHOP and Brake Assist VISIT WORKSHOP Have come up a few times and Ive had them reset by an independant merc mechanic, He said that a voltage drop can cause it and suggests a new battery? I have also herd that the brake pedal switch can also trigger this fault by way of a short. I do love brake assist its like having a magic brake pedal on an invisable foot!
Have any of you had the same niggles and could you offer some advice as to what to tackle first? Many thanks in advance. BJ_Hogg
