Hi All,
I have a Mercedes CL500. It is fairly powerful car. Yesterday I started getting a warning that it needed coolant. As I was half way through my journey I thought I would go home and look at it. Half way through, the coolant warning warning signal changed to red. Basically the onboard computer was saying that I should stop take it to a service station immediately. Being a novice I thought let's get home and sort it out. I didn't manage to get that far. Smoke started coming own and I had to quickly stop by a side road. As soon as I stopped I could see water coming out from the bottom of the engine. I called AA and the guy said that it is most likely the Thermostat. He said it was going to be Thermostat or the Engine Fan. If it was the Thermostat he said it wouldn't cost a great deal.
Anyway, I took it to my local garage this morning. They checked it out and said it was the Engine Fan. The bill is roughly £500 + Vat for the engine fan and labour. The garage mechanic says that Mercedes Thermostats rarely go. I am no car expert although I have owned a good few cars so far. I need some advice. How can I know if he is telling the truth and how will I know if he has put in a new fan? As far as I am concerned, he could just put in a new thermostat and that fixes the problem and he charges me for the bigger fan bill.
I am new to this forum and I glad that I found a forum for Merc fans.
Any advice or pointers will be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
