My fan (viscous) comes in at about 105 (ish) which I find uncomfortable to look at in traffic, I've read about people talking of "winter" thermostats? will this switch the fan on sooner? if so at roughly what temp? Thanks guys
I would assume a winter thermostat would cut off circulation of the coolant until a higher temp is reached and a summer one the opposite. Viscous fans cut in at a set temp I would think. It is a viscous fan you have, not an electromagnetic clutch one? If it is the latter you could change the temp sender unit for a lower temp one. Saying all of that these engines are usually designed to run at high temps in traffic.
What model do you have?

Mike
its the 2.0L petrol model. I think I'll need to replace the head gasket soon, while its in the shop I want to replace the thermostat, if there is a choice was thinking of a stat that would work at a lower temp? currently the temp gauge sits at around 110 in traffic. had the coolant expantion tank tested and found gas leaking, a sign that the gasket is on its way out? what would you guys suggest for the thermostat? (high or lower setting)? thanks
Not good to run an engine too cool, increases wear. Very important to have good oil and also to use correct rating spark plugs, soft ones could run too hot.
