Hi all,

I am very happy with my 190e 1994 with only 66 000 miles. all be it very old.
Low maintenance costs but the mpg are really bad.

I have the chance of buying a e220 CDI Avantgarde 2004, 145 000 miles for just £4500
A friend of mine has really looked after it over the years and it has a full service history.
I am sure I would get a much better petrol consumption from this as I would assume the newer diesel engine is much more efficient.
I really like the modern look of this car as opposed to my 190e plus it has all the mod cons like sat-nav and air conditioning. (yes i know more to go wrong)

My only concern is if it was to go wrong and the cost of Repair.

Please could you give me some advise to help in my decision, many thanks.

Convert your 190 to LPG mate you will save more money and STILL END UP WITH A BETTER BUILT CAR.

Hello and welcome to the Forum.

Interesting question. I assume you don't do many miles, so changing cars for better fuel economy might not give you much benefit once all costs are considered.

The 190e you have may well be in virtually new condition at 66,000 miles? They were well equipped, well built and very robust mechanically and did not rust. I had a 1989 190 which still looked and felt like new when I changed to a larger estate car (280TE) in 2000. True, the 280TE did not use any more fuel than the 190, but it did not feel so good either, being a higher mileage car. I used to think that the 190 just felt and drove like any other larger MB from the B pillars forward.

The 2004 car you are looking at is from just after the era when rust was a massive problem. It will be galvanized and have nano paint (car wash proof). You won't get good petrol consumption from a diesel, although many have tried, but the diesel fuel economy of the 220 engine is good and and it will move along as fast as the traffic will allow. It will have much superior leg room and a vastly bigger boot.

More toys can mean more to go wrong, but it is rarely the accessories that cause the problems.

It is eventually a matter of personal choice. Sadly, good 190s don't fetch a lot these days (although the buyer will be in for a treat), but if the 211 is priced as you say then your "cost to change" should be manageable.

So that does not answer the question, but these are some of the considerations. It will be interesting to hear your choice.

Yes it will give better fuel consumption, but the first thing that WILL go wrong with it will wipe out all of your savings in one go, plus you have to stump up the initial cost. Unless you do a big annual milage you will only be worse off financially buying the newer car.
Of course if you just fancy a change thats different..

I like the 190 but a lot did suffer rust problems on the rear jacking points after 7years, and water getting in the boot and boot lid unlike the 124 built to last 20years, plus hope this helps

Thanks for all your help guys.

I have just borrowed the car for a couple of days.
I drove 40 miles home after putting £10 fuel in, the gauge has not even moved, my 190 would have used over half that and the whole driving experience is wonderful. I know which direction I am heading in.

One other thing to consider is depreciation.

The market seems to be generally awash with cars at the moment (not sure why after the scrappage scheme?).

A low miler 190E may even appreciate verses the stone like depreciation associated with a 145k MB, which at £4.5k is a little on the pricey side too.

190E if you want overall cheaper motoring and reliability.
W211 if you want comfier more modern drive.

What about a W124 220E? much comfier and nicer to drive than a 190E (probably better than the W211 in comfort), no depreciation and cheaper to buy and probably somewhere in between the 190E/W211 in terms of fuel consumption. Still has the old school simplicity/reliability too.

Best of both worlds IMHO

I am surprised at the defence of the 190, it really was built down to a price, not a patch on the 124, and you will be well pleased with an e220.

.... too many cars!
I wasn't competing, merely reinforcing what a good idea you had. I hope you can have it and that it will be a joy to you. ;)

If only I had the space ...... two Mercs, five VW's plus all the stuff that has to go with them ..... My heart is on a pristine W123 before a 190 ......
