Thinking of buying a Mercedes

I'm thinking of swapping my current car with a Mercedes E Class.

I currently have a VW Passat 2.0 petrol 2002.

I'm thinking of purchasing a Mercedes E Class W211 320 cdi Sport 2007.

Is there any reason not to, or any common faults I should look out for?

It's being sold at a main dealer and looks spot onto me, I may just be dreaming as it is fairly expensive to me, but just getting an idea whether to persue my dream or stay away.

I know with the passats, there's common faults and problems and things to look out for, so is there for this car?

Many thanks :D

Rust. 7g valve body can go, turbo seals leak jamming the swirl flap motor and the manifolds on rare occasions can block up with EGR deposits.

Nice performing car that does 40mpg no problem and 150mph too. I should know, I had one.

But the running costs are more akin to its performance than its economy.

Hmm sounds rather expensive if worst case scenario.

I'd be buying the car from main dealer so will come with the 12 month warranty, but anything happens is usually on the 13th month :O

2007 is post-facelift so a better proposition than the earlier ones.

Only you can make the final decision. We're extremely good at helping others spend their money, but it's not our money so it's dead easy for us!

The E Class, even in basic form, is a complex vehicle. As has been rightly said, the later ones were much improved over the earlier crap.

But if things go wrong, it doesn't take much for deep pockets to be needed.

Same for most cars, to some degree, but sometimes they can be extremely expensive to put right.

A good one, though, is very good - and very satisfying to own/drive.

Whichever way you decide to go, best of luck with it!

I had a 211 for a short while - never noticed any rust problems (unlike the W210) went like a dream - just negotiate the best price from the dealer!

Good luck

A 2007 should be past the rust era.
As said the turbo seals can leak oil onto the swirl motor destroying it, but the design has been modified a little. How reliable that makes that issue I can't say.
Is the 2007 post SBC, that's becoming a pita for many?

The use of nano paint (what ever that is) and metal galvanising phased in from 2003 has helped a lot.
The 25%+ brown / original paint colour Mercs are certainly a less common sight (for sore eyes) these days.

Thanks for the info, like I said it's a dream and knowing me wont ever happen, but as my passats a bit poorly I think about swapping it, however I have been gawping at the E class for ages.

I don't like the newer shape one, seems plasticy and done on the cheap.

With the common problems, is it a case of "it will fail" or like normal, some people get issues, some don't?

It's like my Passat, you WILL get the plenum chamber clogging up

Like all cars there are some weaknesses that I posted in this thread. Not all cars are affected by it but don't subscribe to the "all bad cars are owned by forum members who join to moan"

I had a basket case of an E320 but joined here when I owned an E220 that gave trouble.

The E320 is a great drive and laugh out loud fast but it's more niggly.

They can be maintained more cheaply outwith the dealer network but consider you're looking at a 5yo £40k car.

The turbo seal things not a dear repair and cleaning around there every service and changing every second service is good practice.

Engine bearings can in rare but not unheard of cases let go. I've heard an 09 car do this bit it's rare and I suspect good quality oil and servicing will reduce the odds.

Turbo actuators can go, a grand there and the 7g valve body can go, about a grand there.

Want my advice based on 45k miles in an E220, 45k miles in an E320 and 12k in a C220.

The 220 engines and gearboxes simply don't go wrong and according to a specialist bullet proof. The 320 is a nicer engine to drive with bit the 7g doesn't shift gears as nicely.

I'd find an E220cdi AG, which will be more reliable and a lot nicer than your passat, and newer for the money or cheaper for the age and stick a set of used AMG wheels on it.

Hi I have a e280 cdi sports (07), purchased 2 1/2 years ago, and it hasn't missed a beat, apart from replacing glow plugs, and 1 lower ball joint, the only other things done on it has been serviceable items.

What I would say is of you went ahead with the purchase of the e320, you would not regret it, comfort, smoothness, refinement and handling are top notch.

By the way whats the mileage, and if you dont mind me asking, what is the asking price.

Same. Though I only had one, but it was a 2004 model. No rust, even now, and no major faults.

Do you have a link to this specific car?

Mine is only a little later than this one and has been ace.

Refined, quick, economical, spacious - 320CDI W211/S211's are proper cars.

No worries john, I knew that the first day I picked her up from the dealers, and 2 1/2 years down the line, my opinion hasnt changed one bit. My e280 has been a dream, I can only speak for what I have experienced on my car.
