Thinking of buying a ML270

We are thinking of spending approx £5-6k on a ML270, are we mad!! Have been MB owners for the last 4 years (CLK320 Cab and now a E270) and are now thinking of trading in our Mitsi Pajero 2800 (not a mpg frugal car by any means). Obviously the bottom has dropped out of the "expensive" 4x4 market and a ML is a lot of car for the money (2000 -2002 models available for our budget) but is it a false economy with reliability issues? Annual mileage for the ML would be in the region of 6k with 80% of that being trips of 10miles and below. We use a indie for the E class and would (possibly) use them or home maintain (as we have for the Pajero). I know that 4x4's are the satan's spawn at the moment but SWMBO will not really drive anything else (road prescence, view of the road and wanting to drive a "butch" car!). Any comments and guidelines would be much appreciated, thanks

Go for it, I have had my ML for over two years and love it.
I have had only one problem with the autobox that was sorted with a ne control unit by my indi. It has a small amount of rust that I can sort, my 10 month old Freelander was going rusty.
I do about 15000 miles a year in mine and on a long run it returns around 34mpg.
For the money you are looking at then you will get on hell of a car.

I had an ML270cdi and loved it. Truly one of the most comfortable cars on a long run I have ever owned. Sitting high and seeing far is great when cruising and exploring. And loads of space.
